Ferron Magnetic Inks manufacture a range of bespoke magnetic inks (magnetic slurry) for mass transit, energy tokens, parking, train tickets etc. The wide variation of coercivity from less than 100 oersteds to in excess of 4000 allows customers particularly in specialist security areas both a wide and individual choice.
Magnetic stripe cards usually comprise of the card itself and a film of magnetic media (sometimes commonly known as slurry, ink & lacquer). Applied as a stripe. The card can carry other features such as holograms and smart card chips.
Substrates for high volume applications such as mass transit are usually paper based. Some systems however require more durable cards, in this instance the choice would be polyester or PVC.
Magnetic Media
Gamma ferric oxide has been commercially used for recording since 1937 and is still the most commonly used material in magnetic striping. The coercivity is approximately 300 OE & is usually referred to as Lo Co.
The use of high coercivity media is becoming more widespread. The potential of higher data density & most importantly resistance to unintentional erasure are of utmost importance. This type of media is known as HICO of which there are a number of coercivities. Around 3000 oersteds the usual area.
